چکیده

Open source software development represents a fundamentally new concept in the field of software engineering. Open source development and delivery occurs on Internet time. Developers are not confined to a geographic area. They work voluntarily on a project of their choice. Developers work for peer-recognition and self-satisfaction. Open Source software is always in an evolutionary stage: it never reaches a final stage. As new requirements emerge the software is enhanced by the user/developers. In this paper, we give an introduction to the insights of open source software development. We then elucidate the perceived benefits and point out the differences between open source and closed source software development approaches.

Open source software is becoming a major trend in the software industry. Operating systems (OS), Internet servers and several other software applications are available under this licensing conditions. This article assesses the security of open source technology, namely the Linux OS. Since a growing number of critical enterprise information systems are starting to use Linux OS, this evaluation c...

Source of Cement in the Great Oolite Reservoir, Storrington Oil Field, Weald Basin, South of England

The source of cement in oilfields is critical to the prediction of the distribution of cements in the reservoirs and also prediction of reservoir quality. The source of mineral forming cements has been determined for the Storrington oolitic carbonate reservoir (Middle Jurassic Great Oolite Formation, Weald Basin, onshore UK) using a combination of petrography, electron microscopy, fluid inclusi...

Movement Ideology vs. User Pragmatism in the Organizational Adoption of Open Source Software

The free and open source software (F/OSS) computing movements have argued that F/OSS projects lead to better software, freedom from vendor control, and social benefits by sharing software and its associated source code. While these movement grew out of the interests of programmers to write better software for their own purposes, the open source movement has focused on gaining widespread adoptio...

Source Security and the Dark Side

Does the open source software development process lead to more secure software? In this article we attempt to explore arguments for and against this premise. First, we need to understand what open source software is and how it differs from closed source software. Open source allows users access to the source code, or internals, of the software. A popular example of open source software is the L...
